Richard Southwell  (ca 1815–1899)

According to the 1841 census, Richard Southwell, a pianoforte maker (recorded age 26, born in Ireland), was living with Matthew Southwell and his family in London. Later censuses have variations on his age (1851 = 31; 1861 = 38; 1871 = 54; 1881 = 66; 1891 = 76). His death certificate in 1899 gives his age as 82 years and his occupation as pianoforte maker journeyman.

The marriage certificate gives his father’s name as John Southwell (deceased) and both father and son’s occupations are given as pianoforte maker. (Grateful thanks to Alan Dixon, a descendent of Richard Southwell, for drawing this certificate to our attention).
