Amelia Southwell was baptised at the Church of St James Piccadilly in February 1829. On 7 August 1856 she married Henry Haldane, a pianoforte maker - and son of a pianoforte maker. Their daughter Amy was born in 1857. The couple are still shown as living together in the 1861 census, but the marriage appears to have broken down and by 1871 Amelia and her young daughter are to be found living in the household of Albert Sauvee, a French engineer in London. It seems love must have flourished between Albert (1842 - 1914) and the young Amy and they were married when she was only 18 years old in 1875.

In the 1871 census Amelia was living with the couple and her status is still shown as married. In the 1881 census her status is given as widowed; however it now appears that this was not at that time true. In 1871 Henry Haldane is to be found living as a boarder in the establishment of one Hannah Mackenzie, a widow with two sons and a daughter. The 1881 census return confirms that he was co-habiting with Hannah, this time listed as Hannah Haldane, whose two sons Alexander and Edwin Mackenzie were also pianoforte makers. Whether a bigamous marriage ceremony ever took place is not known; perhaps Hannah just assumed the name Haldane for convenience. We have not as yet located a record of Amelia's death.
