Following the decline of the business in London in the 1870s Frederick Southwell opened a studio at 27 North End, Croydon.

This is one of several decorative designs that began to replace the earlier plain backstamps. Unusually, it shows the address as 65 North End, suggesting that he moved the studio at some point.
