Educated deduction suggests that this is a rare example of the earliest back-stamp, dating to the period between ca 1857 and 1860 when William H. Southwell was establishing himself as a photographer. It gives the address 16 Baker Street only and does not bear the royal coat of arms. Contemporary newspaper reports have confirmed that at this period Southwell was active in taking animal photographs, in particular sporting dogs, and was building a reputation amongst the sporting circles of the aristocracy. |
