Matthew Southwell  (1805–1893)

Matthew was either a child of William and Frances, or just possibly a child of his son John, since in 1841 Richard Southwell, who has definitely been established as a child of John, was living with him in London.

As is the case with Frances Southwell, he seems to have been uncertain where he was born. The 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses all give his place of birth as Ireland; however, the 1881 and 1891 cenus returns give his place of birth as Liverpool. His occupation is consistently given as pianoforte maker. In 1841 he was living at 2 Albert Place, High-street, Hoxton, Middlesex. In 1851 and 1861 he was living in Chichester; In 1871 at Broadwater, Christchurch, Worthing; in 1881 at Blandford Forum, Dorset; and in 1891, now retired, he was living with his widowed daughter, Elizabeth Lewis (a dressmaker) in Worthing.

He died 6 March 1893 in Worthing.
