Southwell Brothers Backstamps

Southwell Backstamp

Following the decline of the business in London in the 1870s Frederick Southwell opened a studio at 27 North End, Croydon.

A notice in The London Gazette dated 31st August 1877 stated that a 'liquidation by arrangement' took place for Frederick Southwell (occupation 'Artist') in the County Court of Surrey, quoting his address as 23 Oakfield Road, Penge. This is an early backstamp from the Croydon studio that shows that he also operated from Penge.
