Albert Edward Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, known as Edward, was born 9 November 1841, the second child and eldest son of Queen Victoria. He was Prince of Wales and heir apparent to the British throne for longer than any one else in history, as a direct consequence of the Queen's longevity — at her death she had reigned for longer than any other British monarch.

Edward married Princess Alexandra of Denmark at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, on 10 March 1863. They had six children, though the youngest lived for only one day. He had many mistresses throughout his married life; one estimate suggests as many as fifty-five, but he never acknowledged any illegitimate children.

Edward was crowned Edward VII of the United Kingdom on 9 August 1902, about 18 months after the death of Queen Victoria, and was reported at the time as the most popular monarch since Charles II. He died of severe bronchitis and after several heart attacks on 6 May 1910 at Buckingham Palace.
